Improving through challenges
“I know that in the coming years, with the continuous improvement in technology, we will be faced with more difficult challenges. We will again encounter new systems that we have not heard of. This time, more than being scared, I am excited to learn and challenge myself again.”
I have been with SEAMEO INNOTECH for 20 years now, but my impression of the Center stays the same. For me, it is an organization full of innovative and creative people working together to move education forward.
When I first came to the organization, I doubted if I would really fit in and meet their standards. Everyone here came from prestigious universities, while all I have is enough experience. However, while I was busy doubting myself, I did not realize that I am building on my skills little by little. I was sent to different training programs and I was asked to solve challenging Information and Technology issues.
One day, I was asked to go to the Office of the Director. Not knowing what it was about, I found myself facing the big bosses of the organization. They suddenly asked me if the Center has the capacity to host an online course platform. I was caught off–guard that I immediately said yes. How can you say ‘no’ to a Director? While online courses and e-learning was a big buzz that time, I personally did not know much about those. I accepted the challenge and worked my way to make sure that the Center will be able to successfully establish an online course platform.
I researched on its requirements and technicalities. Our unit underwent a training on establishing and managing the platform. We developed the platform in weeks. The process of putting up the online learning platform was challenging. Introducing it to the learners in the different provinces of the country was also difficult. But all the work was worth it. It was a breakthrough for the Center to develop and launch the platform.
The learning platform, iFLEX, was continuously improved and is still up and running to this day. Thousands of learners have improved their capacities using the platform through the Center’s varied learning programs, and I am glad that I have shared my skills and knowledge to help develop that platform.
My years with SEAMEO INNOTECH is full of unexpected challenges. But I realized that through these challenges I was able to learn a lot, improve myself, and gain more confidence. Looking back, I found myself saying “Kaya ko pala! (So I can do it!).” Sometimes, fear comes to us first that we think we cannot do things; but if we just really try and do our best, we realize that we can. I am thankful that I have been surrounded with people who believe in me and push me to be a better version of myself.
I know that in the coming years, with the continuous improvement in technology, we will be faced with more difficult challenges. We will again encounter new systems that we have not heard of. This time, more than being scared, I am excited to learn and challenge myself again. One thing I have learned through time is that challenges and issues will always be there. However, through these, we learn to be more creative and innovative.
